The Book

A verse-novel of the ancient Amazons

The Lay of the Vixens is a fiercely feminist and realistic fantasy verse novel (or, if you prefer, epic poem) about Amazons in an ancient world, a world of goddesses, priestesses and soldiers, divine oracles and bloody actions, but especially, of girlfriend love and feminine solidarity. Its' heroines are no plastic saints; by turns, they are kind and cruel, gentle and vicious, heroic and evasive, and civilised and barbaric. How else can the Queendom of the Amazons survive in a world of all too many violent men?

Vixens is “realistic” in the sense that there is no magic, nor magical animals, nor do goddesses materialise, although divine visions are vouchsafed. It is “fantasy” in that it does not take place in the world, nor in the history, that we know, but in a similar world and a similar past.

Come, enter it, and see in your mind's eye, the triumphs and tragedies of the Amazon soldiers of the Vixens War Band of Huntresses, as they seek to defend their freedom against attack. Here, in your mind's eye, as they sing hymns to their goddesses, anthems of joy, and laments for their fallen.

O Divine Huntress

O divine huntress! Patroness of our standards! Be with us as we go forth to war! You know that we did not want this war you know we fight only to defend our freedom you know our cause is just. Be with us as we face the foe! Our bows are strong, our arrows are sharp, let our aim be true! Our axes are hard, their blades are keen, let our arms be strong! Our horses are sound, our horses are eager, like the wind they gallop, they charge in contempt of the foe, let them ever be tireless! O divine huntress, be with us! Let hostile man know your power! Let us ride to victory!

The Battle Hymn of the Amazons, in section VI (or, if you prefer, canto VI) of the Lay of the Vixens.

In Its True Colours

Riders beneath a rising moon

In Greek report, the Amazons were held to be a nation entire unto themselves, riders and archers who met even the most celebrated of heroes as equals in the field, dwelling, so it was said, at the very edge of the known world. Little of their history survives except in fragments, filtered through centuries of retelling by those who feared or admired them in equal measure. The Lay of the Vixens takes up that old, incomplete thread and answers it in song: a lyric composed for riders who refused, against every expectation, to be forgotten.
